![]() Then I placed the jar in a closed cupboard away from sunlight. Also, if it does happen to go moldy, I will know how long it took to do so as I’ll be keeping an eye on it daily (but fingers crossed, it won’t!!). The date is important, as I will be straining this in about three weeks. Then I used the handle of a wooden spoon to give the mixture a gentle stir, so that all the air bubbles rise up.Īt this stage I added a little more oil to make sure all the plant material is fully covered with oil. I used Australian extra virgin olive oil. Once the jar is full with the plant material, I poured some good quality olive oil all the way to the brim. It appears that some would recommend using only the dry herb (rather than fresh) specifically for this reason in an infusion, so to start I have made one small batch only, to see how well this holds up. It is imperative that both the jar and the plant material is absolutely dry, to avoid mould formation. These I cut up in smaller parts, and added to a dry glass jar. ![]() I would recommend Susun Weed’s videos on this topic for anyone interested (on youtube).įirst, I gathered a few leaves and flowering stalks. My comfrey oil infusion is a first, having never done this before. I aim to record my budding herbal interests, both successes and failures alike. In this post, though, I focus on the medicinal properties of comfrey. It is also a plant that is very easy to grow, even in a tropical setting. All of these are important in the tropical garden, where nutrient loss is very high due to the heavy rains experienced over summer months. For starters, it has deep roots that bring minerals up to the surface and enrich the soil its leaves can simply be cut up and mulched into the soil for much added nutrition and improvement it can be placed in a bucket of water, covered, for a few weeks, making a composting tea concentrate that plants and soil will love. ![]() There is also some difference in the way the foliage grows, however as I do not grow the officinale I can’t comment.Ĭomfrey is an excellent (I would even go as far as saying, mandatory) addition to a garden. The difference between the hybrid, and Symphytum officinale, is mainly the flower colour: Symphytum uplandica x has mauve flowers, where as Symphytum officinale has yellow flowers. While the seed packed I got from Eden seeds didn’t provide the botanical name, I believe this is the hybrid variety, Symphytum uplandica x. ![]() I have grown, from seed, two modest bushes of comfrey. ![]()
